Siobhan Magnus Wins The Judges Back With 'Any Man Of Mine'

'Guess who's back? Siobhan!' Kara DioGuardi says after the Shania Twain Week performance.

Country Week is always a wild card on "American Idol," either forcing some creativity from contestants working out of their comfort zones or burying them alive. Since Siobhan Magnus is a bit of a wild card herself, she had no problem tackling Shania Twain Week and making it work for her big voice and oddball sensibility.

Magnus chose "Any Man of Mine," keeping a pretty traditional country arrangement but speeding it up a notch. Twain, who opened up her songbook for the week and acted as mentor, warned Magnus that the song is "all about attitude. You've got to put some attitude in those lyrics."

Siobhan stayed true to Shania's vocals for most of the song — until the end, of course. For the grand finale, she let huge notes fly (including one of her trademark screeches) and unleashed some hair-metal-worthy guitars to match.

The judges have given Magnus a hard time in the past for either coloring inside the lines or going way overboard. What did they think of this go-round?

"I loved it," Randy Jackson said, kicking off the positive reviews and complimenting her "punk/country" look.

"Way to pull the Shania Twain into the station," Ellen DeGeneres said, continuing her choo-choo Twain joke from her first critique.

"Guess who's back? Siobhan!" Kara DioGuardi enthused.

Even Simon Cowell was into it, with one exception: "The screaming at the end may have gone a little bit ... it was almost like you were giving birth up there."

What did you think of Siobhan's performance? Did she get Shania's "attitude" right? Let us know in the comments!

Metal File: Daughters, Dark Funeral, DragonForce, Kylesa & More News That Rules

'I have no hopes of anything good happening in music at all, other than us,' frontman A.S.F. Marshall says.
By Chris Harris and Jon Wiederhorn

Daughters frontman A.S.F. Marshall (or Lex, to fans of the intense, Rhode Island noisecore artisans) doesn't care if you like his band, or if you get offended by the fact that he likes to disrobe mid-gig and hock loogies at the audience. In fact, he's a rather sullen dude. The one thing that seems to brighten his churlish mood is Daughters' forthcoming album, Hell Songs, in stores Tuesday.

Why's that? Well, for the last three years, his band's been playing the same 10 tunes — all of them from Daughters' 2003 debut, Canada Songs. So this fall, when the crafters of cacophonic chaos hit the road, Marshall won't be so bored.

"We've been rehearsing, and it feels so much better to be playing the new stuff," the singer said. "There are a couple of old songs we've been playing, but I don't even want to deal with them."

Of course, several of those fans who do turn out for Daughters' tour with Red Sparowes — which will commence August 12 with an album-release soiree in Providence — might want to hear some of that older material. And sure, Daughters will be blasting out a couple of those tracks during their sets — much to Marshall's chagrin. It took Daughters three years to get around to writing fresh material, and the singer blamed turnover for Hell Songs' delay.

"We spent a lot of time on tour, and whenever we'd get home, someone would leave the band," he said. "So, we had to fix all that and find people who would stick around. Every time we had a chance to write, we'd spend the time teaching someone else all this old crap. That was a bit of a problem. But we have people now who don't want to leave, so that's good."

With Hell Songs, Marshall tried to convince the rest of Daughters — which formed in 2001 and rose from the ashes of As the Sun Sets — that longer is better. "I was pushing them to make the songs a bit longer, which I think we all wanted to do," he said. "It's boring playing short songs over and over again." The average length of the tunes on Canada Songs is about a minute and 20 seconds, with the shortest track running 34 seconds long. On Hell Songs, the average is about a minute and 50 seconds, with one track lasting six minutes.

"It's boring playing for 30 seconds, then you stop, then you play another 30 seconds — it's stupid," he continued. "I couldn't stand doing it any more. The only goal I had with this record was to make it longer. But as far as what kind of music we were going to write, we weren't trying to top ourselves. It just came out naturally. I was listening to a lot of gospel stuff — like old '30s, '40s gospel music. The lyrics are about hell, Jesus, sex, death, fire — whatever. I don't know what people want to hear, and I don't give a sh--. I don't expect anything — I don't listen to new music, because I don't want to. I have no hopes of anything good happening in music at all, other than us. We're probably the only good thing out there anymore.

"We get together and we write what we want to play," he continued. "We don't try to sound like this or that or whatever. I'm not going to stop screaming because so-and-so is popular. I don't give a damn. ... I don't know if we fit in anywhere. All the bands I like are broken up or someone's dead."

Daughters will be on tour with Red Sparowes through September 19 in Austin, Texas, and will team up with Pelican and Nachtmystium the following day in Denton, Texas, for seven shows — the last being on September 30 in Seattle. Marshall said the band will play several shows this fall with Since by Man too, but that trek's still be worked out. You can see also catch Daughters at the 10th annual Dirt Fest in Birch Run, Michigan, on August 19, along with the Dillinger Escape Plan, Every Time I Die, the Black Dahlia Murder and Fear Before the March of Flames.

"It'll be killer to finally return overseas." Added Enslaved guitarist Ivar Bjornson: "I have awaited this moment since I don't know when. You won't be disappointed; neither will we." ... My Chemical Romance frontman Gerard Way got married over the weekend, his representative confirmed to MTV News on Wednesday (September 5). The Projekt Revolution tour, which featured the band, ended Monday in Englewood, Colorado, and Denver radio station 93.3 FM reports that Way married Mindless Self Indulgence bassist Lyn Z that evening at the venue, the Coors Amphitheatre. MSI were on the Projekt Revolution tour as well and are slated to support MCR on their European tour beginning October 30. ...

Lindsay Lohan attorney Alfred Gerisch filed a brief late last week supporting the starlet's request for the dismissal of all or part of a negligence suit that had been filed against her over an October 2005 car crash, according to Los Angeles TV station CBS 2. In the brief, Gerisch claimed Raymundo Ortega is using lies about Lohan being drunk at the time of the crash "as a battering ram to force a settlement." Gerisch cited as the evidence a police report that called Lohan an "innocent victim" and stipulated alcohol was not involved in the incident, although Ortega's attorney Robert G. Klein has called the document hearsay. A hearing on Lohan's motions is set for Tuesday in Los Angeles Superior Court. ...

Busta Rhymes (real name: Trevor Smith) saw his trial postponed Wednesday after the prosecutor and the defense lawyer said they weren't ready to begin, The Associated Press reports. Instead, a judge ordered the rapper to appear in court November 7 for hearings on charges of attacking two men, driving drunk and driving with a suspended license. He previously rejected a deal that would land him in jail for a year. ...

Looking healthier than she had prior to her reported drug overdose and hospitalization last month, Amy Winehouse took the stage at Tuesday night's Mercury Awards show in England to sing "Love Is a Losing Game." The asking price for the house — which Usher bought from L.A. Reid — is a cool $1.9 million. ...

A judge on Wednesday approved Jennifer Lopez's $545,000 arbitration award in a lawsuit against her first husband. Also in accordance with a court-ordered arbitrator's decision early last month, Los Angeles Superior Court Judge Michael C. Solner issued a permanent injunction barring Ojani Noa from publishing negative details about the singer/actress. Lopez had filed the breach-of-contract lawsuit over Noa's plans to publish a tell-all book in which he was expected to claim Lopez had multiple affairs. Solner also told Noa to give Lopez all copies of materials related to the book, and denied his request for another 30 days to find a lawyer. ...

It sounds like fans aren't feeling the American Idols Live Tour this time around. Halfway through the outing, there were no sellouts for the first 30 shows on the tour, with only one date topping the 93 percent capacity mark — a gig in winner Jordin Sparks' home state of Arizona — Billboard Boxscore reports. Compare that to last year's tour, which boasted appearances from Taylor Hicks, Chris Daughtry, Katharine McPhee and Elliott Yamin — and had 17 sellouts in its first 30 dates and 10 shows with more than 93 percent capacity. Boxscore reports 14 of first 30 shows for the current tour were below 60 percent capacity and a gig in Birmingham, Alabama, was at an anemic 38.9 percent. ...

Apparently $31 million isn't good enough for Rob Zombie. While the director's "Halloween" scared up a whopping figure at the box office over the weekend, he's "not going to do any more 'Halloween' movies, or any more remakes of any kind," he told EW.com. In fact, Zombie isn't even so sure he'll be sticking to horror when it comes to his recent deal with Dimension Films. "I signed up for two more pictures, but not two more 'Halloween' pictures. They're going to be original stuff — and I don't necessarily know that they're going to be related to the horror genre either.'' ... The sheriff who was criticized for briefly allowing Paris Hilton to leave jail for house arrest explained his actions just hours after Hilton was released from jail on Tuesday. According to a Reuters report, Sheriff Lee Baca suggested that he made the controversial move because he feared for Hilton's life. As the sheriff of this county, I'm not going to let any inmate die in our jails if I know something that can be done that solves the medical problem. ... What's worth more? A former medical examiner testifying for Phil Spector's defense said Wednesday that Lana Clarkson was an aging actress who was out of work and battling depression and health problems — and that after studying her e-mails, medical records and other evidence, he concluded her death was a suicide. Vincent DiMaio said Clarkson had broken her wrists in an accident in 2002; that she had been taking Vicodin; that she wrote to one of her doctors that she "was at the end of her rope and could not function"; and that she noted in an August 21, 2002, day planner entry, "First sober day." DiMaio also debated the prosecution's reconstruction of Clarkson's death on Wednesday. He disagreed with the contention that bruises on her tongue were caused by a gun being forced into her mouth, saying expanding gases from the gunshot were the likely cause. He also refuted the notion that Clarkson's body had been moved, presumably by Spector; DiMaio argued that the pressure of gunshot gases can cause a body to move after death. ...

Don't go to your doctor saying you have "video game addiction" symptoms just yet. On Wednesday, the American Medical Association chose a milder measure over a previously prepared report that would have encouraged the term to be included in a manual of psychiatric witnesses, according to AP. Ne-Yo Defends Beyonce 'Dis' Statements

'I'm tired of being nice to dumb people. ... Bottom line, Beyonce is my friend,' 'Irreplaceable' songwriter tweets.
By Jocelyn Vena

When a comment from Ne-Yo hit the Internet in which the songwriter said that he wished he could have kept the Beyoncé hit "Irreplaceable" for himself, some took it as a dis to the star.

"One song that I gave away and didn't want to, but it's actually a good thing that I did, is Beyonce's 'Irreplaceable'. I honestly wrote that song for myself, but that song taught me a very interesting lesson: Many women don't think that differently. ... However, a man singing it comes across a little bit misogynistic, a little bit mean," Ne-Yo, who wrote the song, said in an interview.

When it was implied on Twitter that Ne-Yo was dissing the Sasha Fierce star with his comments, the singer/songwriter defended himself. "Aiight my dude. Send me the link to where I said ANYTHING disrespectful about Beyonce, PLEASE! Dying to hear this," he wrote. "Just heard the audio where I supposedly dissed Beyonce. ARE Y'ALL SERIOUS!?! Did y'all even listen to what I said!?!"

Ne-Yo then continued to tweet his anger toward those who misunderstood what he said. "I said I originally wrote the song for me. That's true, so OF COURSE I didn't want to give it away originally. IT WAS FOR ME," he wrote. "Once I realized how the song comes across if sung by a guy, that's when I decided to give it away. HOW IS THAT DISSING BEYONCE!?! She took the song and made it a smash, NOBODY can deny that ...

"You know what? At first I was apologetic about what the hacker said, now that I've heard the audio myself, not so much," he continued. "Y'all should listen a lil' harder before you start dissin' people. Makes you look real dumb. I'm tired of being nice to dumb people. ... Bottom line, Beyonce is my friend. To HELL with anybody that ain't SMART enough to understand what I truly meant."

Audioslave Honor Rebellion With The Clash, Che Guevera, Shaq In 'Original Fire' Video

Director splashes images of rebels over band for first clip from Revelations.
By Corey Moss

HOLLYWOOD — What do the Clash, Latin-American revolutionary Che Guevara and Shaquille O'Neal have in common?

Well, for one, the seemingly unrelated trio appear in Audioslave's new video for "Original Fire." The reason? All are considered influential rebels by the band.

"The video, in some ways, is about the thread of music and cultural figures with integrity that were important parts of our history — how all those streams flow together to where we are today," guitarist Tom Morello explained.

Graphic designer/video director P.R. Brown, whose résumé includes videos for Matisyahu and Death Cab for Cutie, directed the clip last week in Los Angeles. Brown used miles of stock tape to create classic band-flier imagery that he then projected onto walls as well as onto Audioslave themselves.

"From the Clash to Malcolm X, from Evel Knievel to Shaq to Che Guevara to James Brown — all are going to be in this video where we're rocking furiously," Morello added.

The guitarist, who described "Original Fire" as hard-rocking, but with a '70s funk and soul influence, has been talking up the song since March (see "New Audioslave LP: 'Led Zeppelin Meets Earth, Wind & Fire' ").

"It's a jam," he said last week. "It's one of those songs where the genesis was a riff that I had for a very, very long time and imagined it happening in a certain way. When we started jamming in the room, the song morphed into something completely different, completely unexpected and a lot better than I ever imagined it being."

"Original Fire" is the first single from the band's third LP, Revelations, which is due in September. Brendan O'Brien, who mixed Audioslave's Out of Exile and Soundgarden's Superunknown, and produced Rage Against the Machine's Evil Empire and The Battle of Los Angeles, helmed the sessions.

"We came off tour and wrote the songs very quickly," Morello said. "It's a band that's only five years old making our third record, which is very exciting to us. It's a band that's very prolific and we felt we were hot off the road, so we got in the studio, wrote songs that we love, cranked them out and are excited to have it coming out."

Since recording Revelations, Morello has returned to the studio as a producer, overseeing two tracks for his old friend Miles Solay's band, Outernational (see "Tom Morello Thinks Outernational Could Be The Next Rage Against The Machine").

"In some ways they're like a world-music Rage Against the Machine," Morello said. "Outernational uncompromisingly tells the truth, and they paint a picture of the world the way they see it and a way that we don't hear on the radio and television as much as people need to. They're very political, but super exciting."

Jared Leto Calls Kurt Cobain Clip 'An Exploratory Process'

During '30 Seconds to Mars: State of the Union' live stream, Leto says he made short film 'to explore the character' of the Nirvana frontman.
By James Montgomery

On April 5, a day that marked the 17th anniversary of the death of Kurt Cobain, Jared Leto posted a video of himself performing the Nirvana song "Pennyroyal Tea" as Cobain on his website.

While most were struck by the sheer emotion of the clip — Leto is an avowed Cobain fanatic — others took it as the 30 Seconds to Mars' frontman's de facto audition for the eternally in-the-works biopic about the Nirvana leader — even though Leto wrote on his site that he made the film "to explore the character and explore creative possibilities." On Thursday night (April 28), during MTV News' "30 Seconds to Mars: State of the Union" live stream, Leto took it upon himself to further elaborate on why he decided to film the clip in the first place.

"Basically, about a year and a half ago, I ran into Courtney Love. It was at the Chateau Marmont, and I was talking to her, and she mentioned this book, 'Heavier Than Heaven,' and I said, 'Oh, I'm going to read this book,' because I'm a huge Nirvana and Kurt fan, and the book sounded fascinating, so I read it and I loved it," he said. "And I knew they were making a movie, so I put myself on tape, just to explore the character. It was really just something for me. I never sent it to anyone, I never sent it to the studio or the producers of the film. I just made it for myself, and I never did anything with it. But when the anniversary passed, I said, 'You know, I should just put it out and share it with people,' so that's what I did. I put it on my website."

And though he didn't read any of the negative comments about the clip, Leto understands why some may have viewed it that way. Though, as he pointed out, it came from his heart, and there were no other pretenses involved.

"Some people thought it was a tribute to Kurt Cobain, and maybe in some ways it is. I mean, it's a testament to him, but it was really just an exploratory process," he said. "You know, I make films, I've been an actor all my life, too, and you don't necessarily have to act when you're getting paid to show up on a set and do it. That was just an exploration for me."

Still, he said he hasn't watched the Cobain clip since he posted it — not because of any backlash it may have caused, but because he's already moved on to his next project.

"I can, at times, [watch myself on film] because I want to fix and change and improve, and that's probably why I really like the editing room and the editorial process, where, after I direct a video, I spend a lot of time editing — probably three times or four as the average director will spend editing, and I enjoy that," he explained. "But when it was something like that, you know, I made it, I'm done [and] I gave it away."

What did you think of Leto's Kurt Cobain clip? Let us know in the comments.

White Stripes Drummer Meg White Engaged

White will marry Patti Smith's son Jackson Smith on May 22.
By James Montgomery

Meg White is getting married.

The White Stripes drummer has gotten engaged to Jackson Smith, the son of iconic punk poet Patti Smith and late MC5 guitarist Fred Smith. The couple will tie the knot at a May 22 ceremony in Nashville, Tennessee, according to the Detroit Free Press.

The newspaper quotes several sources as saying that the couple met last summer and have actually been engaged for several weeks. They live in White's Detroit home and chose Nashville as the location for their wedding due to privacy concerns.

"They don't want it to be a circus," the paper quotes a source as saying. "They want it to be about the two of them."

Smith was born outside of Detroit but moved with his mother to New York City after the death of his father in 1994. After high school, he came back to Detroit and played guitar in local acts like Back in Spades, as well as in his mother's backing band. His late father, Fred, was the guitarist for legendary Motor City agit-rockers the MC5.

It will be the second marriage for White, who was famously wed to White Stripes frontman Jack White from 1996 to 2000, though the couple attempted to play off their relationship as that of brother and sister.

The Stripes are currently taking a break as Jack focuses on his new side project, the Dead Weather. He currently lives in Nashville and, according to the newspaper, is expected to attend the ceremony.

The newspaper claims that the couple are also planning to hold a reception in Detroit after their Nashville nuptials.

A spokesperson for Meg White did not respond to MTV News' requests for comment.

The Shins Kick It Old-School With Kinks-y Pop

Albuquerque pop group seeks sincerity on new Oh, Inverted World.
By Chris Nelson

The Shins
Photo: David Ondrick

Some people think the world runs according to a grand scheme. Shins singer/guitarist James Mercer is convinced there's a plan — but he believes it runs counter to all common sense.

"Sometimes it feels like this perfect reverse logic runs everything," said Mercer, whose guitar-pop band released its full-length debut, Oh, Inverted World, on Tuesday. "It's as though everything were exactly the opposite of what it should be. That's when you get really frustrated with things — you know, situations where someone is attracted to the exact person they shouldn't be attracted to. It can be applied to a lot of things, like politicians — the better liar is really the person people love the most." Mercer knows a thing or two about the topsy-turvy.

His band — which manages a Kinks-y and Zombie-ish pop sound without devolving into the strictly retro — has its roots in the indie-rock outfit Flake, which formed in Albuquerque, New Mexico, in 1992. They mutated into Flake Music, while Mercer formed the Shins as a side project in 1997 to concentrate on melodic tunes. When members of Flake Music left town, Mercer was left with a Shins line-up consisting of precisely the same folks who played in Flake way back when, only on different instruments.

While Flake preferred disjointed group collaborations, Mercer completes his Shins tunes before presenting them to bandmates Marty Crandall (keyboards), Neal Langford (bass) and Jesse Sandoval (drums).

"I work pretty hard at that — I like the transitions in good songs," said Mercer, 30, citing the Beatles' "Girl" from Rubber Soul (1965) as an example of perfect subtlety. "One of my favorite moments in songs is when they switch from verse to chorus." Mercer's interest in traditional pop songcraft is evident throughout Oh, Inverted World, where a melody might conjure either a hopeful sunrise or a damp, melancholy evening. The oddly titled "Know Your Onion!" jumps with crisp, lo-fi inspiration. "The Celibate Life" draws its strength in part from jangly guitar and harmonica as well as Sandoval's anxious, understated drumming on what sounds like a shoe box.

On "Caring Is Creepy" the band could be first cousins to '80s Brit hitmakers the Smiths. "In this generation, or at least the people I hang out with, there seems to be this aversion to any sort of real feelings," Mercer said of the track. "To give a sh-- is the opposite of cool. I guess that's where the title phrase came from." The Shins spent the early part of this year garnering acclaim at the South By Southwest and Noise Pop festivals. Later this month, they'll hit the East Coast for some dates with the Red House Painters. Mercer is planning a summer move to Portland, Oregon, while his bandmates will remain in Albuquerque. Although he's still a big fan of his hometown, he has struggled with its lack of a strong rock-music community.

"After touring the whole country with Modest Mouse, I realized that Albuquerque is pretty unique," he said. "You can be in a neighborhood in Portland and it feels like you're in Milwaukee, and the same goes for New York. Albuquerque is a poor city, with an Hispanic majority, which is the cool thing about it."

Simon Cowell, 'Claymates' React To Clay Aiken's Coming Out

'I don't think anyone cares,' 'American Idol' judge says, while fans respond with support, disappointment.
By Jocelyn Vena, with additional reporting from Jim Cantiello

Just a day after People magazine unveiled its cover story about Clay Aiken coming out of the closet, Simon Cowell responded to the news in his usual sarcastic fashion. "Wow. That's a shock. It's like being told Santa Claus isn't real," he told "Extra." "Unbelievable."

But he did offer some words of support for the singer: "Good for him. If he said it, it's the right thing for him. Good for him." Cowell added that he didn't think the singer's fans should be shocked by the revelation, saying, "I don't think anyone cares. Let's face it: It's 2008. You know. Who cares?"

In the years after the singer competed on "American Idol" in 2003, he would neither confirm nor deny his sexuality, despite wild speculation that he was gay.

The MTV community has responded mostly with support for Aiken. "Clay ... Aiken ... is ... gay? This is news how? I'm glad he finally came out, though. Good for him! I just don't understand how this is worthy of a magazine cover or any headline," Tess wrote.

Mspirate924 said, "So what if he's gay? He came out, and that's his own personal business."

Outside of the MTV message boards, it seemed that while many Aiken fans — also known as Claymates — were shocked by the announcement, they wanted to support the "Idol" runner-up. Yenn on the official "American Idol" message board said, "It really makes no difference whether Clay is gay or not. And it's good to see so many people feel the same way."

Stilldannysfan echoed the sentiment, congratulating Clay for not only opening up about his sexuality, but also for starting a family. "I am so happy for Clay, both for becoming a proud papa and for finally being honest and open. I am sure the relief he is going to feel at not having to dodge the question over and over is going to be amazing," the commenter said. "Now he can devote all of his energy to raising his son and singing his songs without having to worry about 'everyone finding out.' Oh, and doesn't he look so completely happy holding his son?"

Other fans seemed to be in denial about Aiken's decision to come out. VoteForTheWorst.com compiled quotes from a number of fan sites, including one that said, "I think many will realize tomorrow that he is saying he is Happy = Gay. Happy about his new son, Parker. Not that he likes men."

Still, others turned their backs on the singer. Another commenter quoted on VoteForTheWorst said, "I was still hoping — wanting to be blind. Now my stomach just feels revolted. It was fun for 5 years. Now for me ... it's over. Wishing Clay all the best."

A fan on the Clayboard wrote, "I just wish he would have kept quiet about it instead of blabbing in a major publication. Now I have to endure the humiliation of being proven to be incredibly STUPID! I have donated all my Clay Aiken tee shirts, CDs, etc. to charity and some of the stuff ended up in the landfill, which is a good place for it."

Meanwhile, there will always be a commenter or two willing to joke about the whole thing. "In other news, Jon Stewart is Jewish, and Kanye West is a crybaby," a reader going by the handle Leon Doyle Is GOD wrote on MTV.com.

Aiken took to his Web site to thank supporters for sticking by his side, according to People.com. "We'll 'talk' more later," Aiken wrote. "But, suffice it to say, for the first time in recent memory, I am speechless. I'm so proud to know and love all of you.

"My family is so much larger than Parker, Jaymes, mom, Brett, etc. It extends to each of you," he added. "And I couldn't be more blessed."

Lollapalooza Rumors: Killers, Tool, Decemberists Joining Lineup?

Lou Reed also rumored to be playing the Chicago festival.

The longer Lollapalooza organizers wait to unveil the lineup for this year's festival, the more people will speculate. The Chicago Tribune and Billboard already leaked the news that the Beastie Boys, Depeche Mode, Kings of Leon and Jane's Addiction will be among this year's headliners.

And over the weekend, the Tribune added a few more names to that list: the Killers and Tool, who will reportedly fill out the remaining headliner slots for the three-day festival (August 7-9). Another act the paper says you can count on is the Decemberists, who might play their new concept album, The Hazards of Love, in its entirety, just like they did at South by Southwest.

The story also confirms that punk godfather Lou Reed has been asked to play a late-afternoon/ early-evening greatest-hits set. A spokesperson for the festival would not comment on the latest rumors and reiterated that the official lineup will be released on April 21.

The Tribune isn't the only Chicago paper speculating about the schedule. An article in the city's alt-weekly, the Chicago Reader, took a slightly more scientific approach to the task by looking at the festival's notorious blackout window for artists, which, according to writer Jessica Hopper, can bar an act from playing within 250 miles and 120 days of Lolla.

Using that logic, Hopper reverse-engineered a lineup by figuring out which acts appear to have Chicago-centric holes in their U.S. tours between April and Lollapalooza, or who might have priced out of Pitchfork's rival Chicago festival. On the basis of those parameters, Hopper offered up a possible return from Girl Talk, as well as potential sets from Bon Iver, No Age, Peter Bjorn and John, Animal Collective, Atmosphere, Bat for Lashes, Jason Mraz and Lykke Li. She even speculates that Taylor Swift — who has an apparently open spot on her tour on August 7 — could pop in, as well as hometown heroes Fall Out Boy, M.I.A. (who just confirmed her first post-pregnancy date for Coachella next month), PJ Harvey and maybe Lil Wayne, though he has a gig in nearby Hoffman Estates on April 10, 111 days before the festival.
