New Releases: Fall Out Boy, Bloc Party, Used, Apples In Stereo & More

Also due Tuesday: Bayside, Barenaked Ladies, Patty Griffin, Sondre Lerche, Clouds, Arab Strap, Apocalyptica.
By Kurt Orzeck

It's been a slow year so far for rock fans, with a best-of Unwritten Law CD and new Shins effort among the most prominent releases so far in 2007. Now it's finally time to strap on the guitars: With nary a rapper in sight — save Jay-Z, who drops a verse on the new Fall Out Boy album — this week is all about the rock.

Doing It Up Right: Say what you will about Fall Out Boy, but they sure do know how to sweeten a deal. In the wake of their Infinity on High being leaked online, the band promised to reward fans who actually buy the set with online access to a live EP, Leaked in London, that was just recorded January 29. But the pop-punk princes aren't stopping there: A limited-edition deluxe digipak comes with five tarot cards and an exclusive booklet cover, while fans who preordered have been treated with an exclusive pack of five buttons.

Party On: Believe it or not, there's actually a second-degree connection between FOB and this week's other heavyweights, Bloc Party. Infinity on High features guest guitar licks by Ryan Ross of Panic! at the Disco — last year, Bloc bailed from a tour with that same band. The sophomore hipsters are feeling less generous than FOB, though: Fans who preordered A Weekend in the City have received only a bonus remix of the song "The Prayer," and the CD itself is frill-free. The album — which lead singer Kele Okereke has called "the living noise of a metropolis" — includes "Song for Clay (Disappear Here)," "Hunting for Witches" and "Waiting for the 7.18."

Get Used To It: One of the most annoying ways record labels try to make an extra buck is by releasing a band's live CD and DVD separately — sometimes at different intervals and sometimes without warning. On that count, fans of the Used have nothing to worry about: The pop-punk group's Berth contains both the CD and DVD versions of its 2005 headlining show in Vancouver, British Columbia. Better yet, the Used have stuffed the package with videos, making-of features and clips of them answering fan questions — and if you order Berth through TheUsed.net, you'll get a T-shirt too.

Snoop Dogg piped up a month ago with a new cut on the "Arthur and the Invisibles" soundtrack, and now he's contributing a fresh slice to another musical companion disc — albeit to a slightly different type of movie. The alternately funny and gory "Hood of Horror" — its tagline is "It ain't all good in da 'hood" — stars the rapper alongside choice B-actors Ernie Hudson and Danny Trejo. Snoop chipped in "Welcome to the Hood" for the soundtrack, which also includes his "Shake That Sh--" (featuring Young Walt, Terrace Martin and Tiffany Foxx), plus selections from Cool & Dre, Al Kapone and, bizarrely, blues-rock fiends the North Mississippi Allstars.

They Do Not Rock: But if your ears are ringing from all the rock and roll this week, don't worry: There are some lower-volume alternatives, as always. "High School Musical" darling Ashley Tisdale — who made history as the first female artist to debut two songs simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 — proves how Headstrong she is with her new LP. Fans who got a head start and ordered through AshleyMusic.com have been gifted with an autographed copy of the disc and a sticker pack.

Someone else who is decidedly not rocking is Jessica Simpson hero Patty Griffin, whose Children Running Through trots out R&B- and gospel-inflected tracks including "Up to the Mountains (MLK Song)," "Burgundy Shoes" and "Someone Else's Tomorrow." Griffin gets a boost from Emmylou Harris on "Trapeze."

Also toning things down is ex-Gus Gus lead singer Daníel Ágúst, whose Swallowed a Star was crafted with Madonna remixer Bix and features mild, bleep-y tunes. U.K. trio Fujiya & Miyagi take it one step further with Transparent Things, which is heavy on kraut and other electronic sounds, and was named after a Vladimir Nabokov novel.

Comp'd: This week also sees the release of a litany of compilation CDs, some slightly more freakish than others. While you're likely to find Yes, I'm a Witch filed in the CD bins under "O," the Yoko Ono collection was largely crafted by other artists. Wayne Coyne of the Flaming Lips, Cat Power and Antony scooped up chunks of previous Ono recordings — mostly her vocals — and spliced them with new musical tracks. Also participating are the Apples in Stereo, who drop their own New Magnetic Wonder LP this week — the album is the first one distributed through Elijah Wood's Simian Records.

The long-winded but self-explanatory 8-Bit Operators: The Music of Kraftwerk Performed on Vintage 8-Bit Video Game Systems is another odd tribute of sorts, blipping and bleeping its way through 15 chestnuts by the electro-kraut pioneers. The roster involves an array of international artists who have delved deep into the genre also known as "chiptune" or "bitpop."

Unlike those tributes, Brian Wilson actually participated directly in a salute to himself that was staged by MusiCares, a group that helps people in the music industry with financial and medical assistance. Everyone and their mother turned up for the 2005 event, and their renditions of classic Wilson/ Beach Boys cuts are captured here: the Red Hot Chili Peppers tackle "I Get Around," John Legend re-creates "I Just Wasn't Made for These Times," the Backstreet Boys reinterpret "When I Grow Up to Be a Man," and more. Wilson helps cap the show by running through "Pet Sounds," "Heroes and Villains" and three more numbers.

Polishing off this week's batch of bizarre comps is A Date With John Waters, a set of 14 love songs handpicked by Mr. "Pink Flamingos" himself. Claiming to go "back to the first record Waters ever shoplifted, 'Tonight You Belong to Me' by Patience and Prudence," the album also encompasses selections by Ike & Tina Turner and Ray Charles, as well as the more obscure Elton Motello and Eileen Barton, the latter of whom appeared in a long list of Waters flicks. And no, the disc doesn't come with a chicken.

Song Title of the Week:

"They're Not Horses, They're Unicorns" from Bayside's The Walking Wounded

Other Notables:

Aereogramme's My Heart Has a Wish That You Would Not Go: The fourth album by the Scottish ensemble doesn't sound all that much like the band's previous releases — instead of alternating big blasts of distorted guitar with introverted, mellow passages, this effort is much more even-tempered. That's largely because a nasty throat infection left singer Craig B mute for a portion of the recording session, which took place in Glasgow. The band can't take credit for the powerful album title, though: It's a line from William Peter Blatty's book "The Exorcist" that didn't make it to William Friedkin's big-screen version.

Jesse Sykes & the Sweet Hereafter's Like, Love, Lust & the Open Halls of the Soul: Jesse Sykes's career has an enormous span, what with her having once been a member of alt-country commandos Whiskeytown but more recently collaborating with the likes of doom-noise metallers Boris and Sunn0))). Her latest with backing band the Sweet Hereafter is their third outing, and it continues the minimalist approach forged with 2002's Reckless Burning and 2004's Oh, My Girl. Scandinavian singer/songwriter Nicolai Dunger lends a hand, but the entire effort was produced by Decemberists collaborator Tucker Martine.

The Makes Nice's Candy Wrapper & Twelve Other Songs: In yet another example of a musician doing the unexpected this week, Josh Smith of Bay Area stoner-metal faves the F---ing Champs and Drunk Horse has come up with ... an R&B album? Recalling the Zombies and Small Faces, Smith gangs up with Aaron Burnham — who graduated from the University of California, Berkeley, with a music degree — and software engineer Jack Matthew for the 13-track opus. Trans Am's Phil Manley, who is also a member of the F---ing Champs, helped the band record Candy Wrapper.

Seven Bands from SXSW That Will Matter

Each year, industry insiders return from the Austin music festival singing the praises of the Next Big Thing. Here are seven bands you'll be hearing from.
By Arye Dworkin

Menomena

Now that the Austin dust has settled, it's time to gain some perspective on last weekend's South By Southwest madness. Thousands of signed and unsigned bands descended on the Texas city like a swarm of locusts (locusts with demos). Ultimately, there were only a handful of bands truly worth recognizing. While Lily Allen, Amy Winehouse and the Stooges may have garnered the most press -- here are some of the bands that may have regrettably slipped through the cracks.

Who: Yeasayer

Where are they from? Brooklyn, New York

Is there a record out? No, not yet. But its debut will be released via Baltimore, Maryland's Monitor Records this coming summer. In the meantime, you can hear a couple of demos on their MySpace page.

Website? Click Here

What do they sound like? At times, the foursome projected a wholly distinct vibe like a manic Peter Gabriel -era Genesis channeled through Animal Collective but the band also manipulates their collective vocals (yes, they all sing) producing a sweet, harmonious cacophony.

The great moment: Performing the whole time under a green hoodie, front man Chris Keating walked intermittently into the audience frantically slapping his tambourine in the air.

Who: Ra Ra Riot

Where are they from? Syracuse, New York

Is there a record out? The band doesn't have a label yet, so there's only a self-released EP (which, incidentally, doesn't do justice to the live show). But based on the buzz of its SXSW performances this will all change very, very soon. What, you can't hear the labels bidding in the background?

Website? Click Here

What do they sound like? The six college aged kids create an enormous, hefty sound complete with a cello and violin, not unlike the Arcade Fire or the Olivia Tremor. And singer Wesley Miles croons earnestly but still not emotive enough that it's emo. Ra Ra Riot has enormous potential and considering the band is only a year old, the actualization is inevitable.

The great moment: Guitarist Milo Bonnacci and bassist Mathieu Santos rested their respective foreheads on one another's shoulders while riffing on their instruments.

Who: Jamie T

Where are they from? London, England

Is there a record out? Jamie's debut Panic Prevention is available in Europe on Virgin Records and at this current time, he has no American label.

Website? Click Here

What do they sound like? The cockney cockiness of the Arctic Monkeys meets the disjointed, slurred flow of the Streets meets the middle-finger attitude of the Clash meets the pop sensibility of Lily Allen meets the carelessness of the Fall. Basically, a lot of meetings.

The great moment: When an audience member noted, "This guy is completely wasted." And it was probably true.

Who: Menomena

Where are they from? Portland, Oregon

Is there a record out? The debut I Am the Fun Blame Monster (an anagram for The First Menomena Album) was released on indie label filmGUERRO and features an 80-page flipbook. This year's critically acclaimed Friend And Foe was released on Barsuk in January and it's inarguably one of the year's strongest records.

Website? Click Here

What do they sound like? The unpretentious side of art-rock. There hasn't been a threesome as competent at playing their respective instruments since Rush. Justin Harris, Danny Seim, and Brent Knopf craft oddly timed, intricate pop songs that are heartbreakingly fragile.

The great moment: When drummer Seim flailed on his kit like the octopus prodigy of Keith Moon.

Who: The Black Lips

Where are they from? Atlanta, Georgia

Is there a record out? There are three indie releases out already but the forthcoming Los Vallentes del Mundo Nuevo, a live album recorded in Tijuana, is their first for Vice Records.

Website? Click Here

What do they sound like? Dirty, dirty rock and roll. The Nuggets -influenced retro-ruckus of the Lips is no revelation but these four rarely sober characters bring the party wherever they go.

The great moment: Considering the band performed thirteen times over the span of four days, there was no definitive great moment. Let's just say that all those live sets culminate into one massive great moment.

Who: The Twilight Sad

Where are they from? Glasgow, Scotland

Is there a record out? Fat Cat Records is currently offering two EPs but the full-length Fourteen Autumns and Fifteen Winters will be out in just a few weeks.

Website? Click Here

What do they sound like? Orchestral rock with a honed passion. The guitar, bass, and drums project an aural fullness while singer James Graham's heartfelt, moving vocals soar above it all. Like Snow Patrol with bite, or Mogwai with sensitivity training.

The great moment: When Graham looked down pensively at the floor holding on to the microphone stand with extreme intensity while his band set off power-chord fireworks.

Who: Datarock

Where are they from? Norway

Is there a record out? Yes, but Datarock Datarock is only available on import and via iTunes, although, Nettwerk will release it this coming spring in the US.
Website? Click Here

What do they sound like? Based on the unabashed silliness of the Datarock uniform--a red hoodie, red sweatpants, and mirrored visors--this band is refreshingly brazen about having fun. Their songs reference the dance rock of Franz Ferdinand, the angular zaniness of Devo and the geeky white boy funk of Hot Chip. There wasn't a still person in the room.

The great moment: When front man Fredrik Saroea riled the crowd up into a frantic clap-along.

Stars Pitch In To Aid Tsunami Victims; Live Aid-Style Concert A Possibility

NBC telethon scheduled for January 15; huge concert in Wales tentatively planned for January 22 and 23.
By James Montgomery

More than a week after tsunamis devastated the coastlines of Southeast Asia, leaving more than 150,000 dead and billions of dollars worth of property damage in their wake, many musicians and celebrities are doing their part to aid the victims.

Ozzy and Sharon Osbourne donated £100,000 (almost $190,000) to Britain's Disasters Emergency Committee during a nationwide charity drive on New Year's Eve that raised more than £60 million. But the Osbournes realized that more money was still needed, and have recorded a public service announcement asking for donations from around the world.

Tsunami Relief: What You Can Do To Help

"Like you, we've been watching images of the tsunami floods and we're shocked by the death and devastation," Sharon said. "But we need to act right now. In order to help the most vulnerable, lots of money is needed quickly."

Hollywood has also done its part. On Monday, Sandra Bullock donated $1 million to the Red Cross International Response Fund to help purchase much-needed medical supplies. Bullock donated a similar amount to the Red Cross following the terrorist attacks on the U.S. on September 11.

Leonardo DiCaprio also made an unspecified "large" donation to UNICEF. He starred in the 2000 movie "The Beach," filmed on the Thai resort island of Phi Phi, which was ravaged by a tsunami.

NBC has announced plans for a January 15 telethon to raise money for tsunami victims. The telethon will air on the network and its sister cable channels, including USA, Bravo, Sci-Fi, MSNBC and CBNC. A similar telecast 10 days after the September 11 attacks featured Hollywood heavyweights like Brad Pitt, Jack Nicholson and Al Pacino, and musical performances by Alicia Keys, Eddie Vedder and Neil Young, and raised more than $150 million (see "Springsteen, U2 Help Raise $150 Million For Victims' Families").

And taking a cue from Bob Geldof, the man who organized Live Aid (the massive concert staged to benefit African famine victims in 1985), British promoters are working to finalize plans for a large benefit concert to take place in Wales, and possibly the U.S. and Australia, too. Scheduling the concert — which would take place at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, on January 22 and 23 — is proving difficult, due to the short planning period, the busy schedules of artists rumored to be involved (including U2, Coldplay, Franz Ferdinand and the Darkness), and an international rugby tournament that will take over the stadium the following week.

"We've [spoken with] a lot of the [British] bands, and the BBC has helped us internationally to get the A-list stars. We've had a lot of support from a lot of bands, [the names of] which we don't want to throw out into the public domain yet, in case the whole thing doesn't get off the ground," said Rupert Moon, Millennium Stadium's business manager, on Tuesday. "The whole project is moving at full speed, and the infrastructure is there, but the next 48 hours are going to be crucial. If it's going to happen, it's got to be massive.

"There's talk of something happening in Sydney [Australia] and in the USA, too, and if they did marry up, then we would look to do something based on the Live Aid model [which featured near-simultaneous concerts at London's Wembley Stadium and John F. Kennedy Stadium in Philadelphia]," Moon continued. "The financial donations people have generated are remarkable, but people need something to get together and show their support physically, just like they did during Live Aid."

In terms of fund raising, Linkin Park were among the first acts to get involved by donating $100,000 to start Music for Relief last week (see "Linkin Park Establish Charity To Help Tsunami Victims"). At press time, several other artists were rumored to be joining the organization, though none could be confirmed. But Linkin Park guitarist Brad Delson said that Music for Relief's mission was an ongoing one.

"We're putting this whole thing together as quickly as we can. And as important as it is to get it going immediately, it's going to be a long-term thing, because there are going to be long-term problems," he said. "The best we can do in the coming weeks, the better. You feel so helpless about this, but bringing attention to the whole situation is so important right now."

According to CBS News, more than 25 nations have now pledged almost $2 billion in disaster-relief funds, but more is still needed. The United Nations has said that the relief effort will be the most costly in world history. And although food and medical supplies are desperately needed, the most effective way you can help is by donating money to any of the charities below.

Chris Brown Talks Snapbacks, N.W.A And The New West

'I'm just a product of all that; all the hip-hop that I grew up seeing,' Breezy tells MTV News about the Cali rap scene.
By Rebecca Thomas

Chris Brown may hail from a little town called Tappahannock in VA, but when it comes to his swag, these days it's L.A. every day for the F.A.M.E. star. Whether he's doing the "Cat Daddy" with Los Angeles trio the Rej3ctz in their colorful clip or teaming up with Compton-born Young Money MC Tyga for the wildly successful Fan of a Fan mixtape, C.Breezy reps for the region.

As we gear up for our New West Week on Monday — MTV News' must-follow series on the upstarts breathing new life into the Left Coast rap landscape, from Odd Future to Dom Kennedy — we spoke to Chris about why he lays his broad-brimmed snapback in La-La Land.

"I been out in L.A. for a while but I think it's just, with me, my style is just me," he said when we asked how he'd been influenced by the City of Angels.

With the exception of standard-bearer Snoop Dogg, energetic efforts from Game and the enduring influence of super-producer Dr. Dre, the West Coast took a backseat in the last decade after the Chronic-fueled dominance of gangsta rap subsided. But although that indelible sound gave way to a scene that's now varied enough to count groups like Black Hippy and Pac Div, as well as Nipsey Hussle and Tyga among its corps, Brown said he was nostalgic for the Chucks-and-Dickies look of Ruthless Records-era N.W.A.

"I'm just a product of all that; all the hip-hop that I grew up seeing ... I'm inspired by everything," the "Look At Me Now" singer said. "And I think fashion kind of goes with me as a creative artist.

"The L.A. scene now is kinda poppin'," he continued. "We brought the snapbacks back ... me and Tyga," he claimed about the trendsetting head gear. "Nobody was really wearing it, it was a handful of people: It was Omarion, it was Tyga, me and Big Sean wearing snapbacks. And we was just really wearing that as our own kind of swag 'cause we were looking at N.W.A and looking at how back in the day they used to have Kris Kross and the whole nine, and we wanted to bring that back for the kids." He quickly added with a laugh, "We ain't taking credit for it, but you know, everybody's wearing 'em now, so we did something good."

Breezy did share the sartorial credit, citing fellow Virginia native Pharrell Williams as another major influence on his Angeleno-tinged style. The N.E.R.D. frontman put his stamp on the hip-hop-meets-skate-punk look early on, eventually launching the Billionaire Boys Club line (Chris was outfitted in the collection when he visited the MTV newsroom).

"I kind of look at Pharrell as one of the advocates of that [look]. I think a lot of kids, whether it be L.A., whether it be New York, a lot of kids modeled after him when he cut that skater/preppy look, then it was Kanye after and [so on]. Pharell was that guy that really set the tone for us as the kids and the generation now."

Starting Monday, stick with us as MTV News turns the spotlight on the New West, the next wave of hip-hop acts helping to restore faith in the L.A. rap scene. From groups like Odd Future to rising MCs like Dom Kennedy, we'll bring you up close and personal to these artists as they carve their own lanes in the post-gangsta rap era. Keep it locked here for the next week for more on the West Coast up-and-comers!-

Songs For Japan Includes Eminem, Justin Bieber, Lady Gaga And More

Benefit album is now on iTunes, with proceeds going to the Japanese Red Cross Society.

On Monday, we learned the names of some of the stars set to appear on Songs For Japan, a compilation album to benefit the ongoing disaster relief efforts in the earthquake- and tsunami-ravaged nation. And on Friday (March 25), not only was the full roster of artists and songs revealed, but the album was made available for purchase on iTunes.

Lady Gaga, Eminem, Beyoncé, Madonna, the Kings of Leon and Katy Perry joined a list of already-announced artists like Justin Bieber, Nicki Minaj and Rihanna on the album, which is available worldwide on the iTunes Store for $9.99. Proceeds from the sale of Songs for Japan will benefit the Japanese Red Cross Society.

All in all, 38 artists lent songs to the album, including legends like Bob Dylan, U2, Bruce Springsteen and the late John Lennon; country acts like Keith Urban and Lady Antebellum; rock artists like the Foo Fighters, R.E.M. and Bon Jovi; pop icons like Madonna and Pink; and top hitmakers like Bruno Mars and David Guetta.

All acts appearing on Songs for Japan — and their labels and music publishers — have waived their royalties and proceeds from the worldwide sales of the album to insure the Japanese Red Cross Society receives as much support as possible. The JRCS will use funds from the album to support its ongoing relief efforts and for eventual recovery assistance to the areas hardest hit by the earthquake and subsequent tsunamis. iTunes will also donate its proceeds from the album's worldwide sales to the benefit of the JRCS.

The track list for Songs for Japan, according to Apple:

1. John Lennon, "Imagine"
2. U2, "Walk On"
3. Bob Dylan, "Shelter From the Storm"
4. Red Hot Chili Peppers, "Around the World"

Ne-Yo 'Spreads Love Through Music' in Japan

'We're definitely out here making a difference, more than just singing and dancing,' singer says of Japan shows.
By By Alvin Blanco, with reporting by Sway Calloway

R&B singer Ne-Yo is doing his part to help victims of the earthquake and tsunami that hit northern Japan on March 11. Despite other artists like Ke$ha postponing their dates in the country, the singer/songwriter — minus some backup dancers — decided to continue his performances and provided charitable aid in the process.

While appearing on MTV's "RapFix Live" via Skype, the Grammy Award-winning singer said that he didn't even consider canceling his tour dates in Japan. "After we heard about what went down, a lot of people was like, 'I know you're not going out there now with everything going on,' " Ne-Yo said. "But our response to that was, 'Of course we still going.' They need the show more than ever. So that's why we're here."

Ne-Yo said that he had not seen any of the devastation firsthand since the performances in Nagoya and Yokohama were not near the epicenter of the earthquake and coast. However, he has been inspired by how the people of Japan, and specifically those at the shows, have dealt with the tragedy.

"It wouldn't be possible to do a show from where everything really went down," he said. "The main thing that we been seeing out here is people coming together, people making donations, helping out their fellow man. As far as the crowds coming to the shows, it's unreal. If you didn't know that anything was wrong, you would never know that anything was wrong. It's just people coming to enjoy a concert, which to me kind of speaks to the spirit of the Japanese people. They're about keeping it going and keeping their spirits high and their morale high, and I dig that."

The "Champagne Life" singer also detailed what he and his Compound Entertainment company have been doing to personally help with relief efforts. "Since we been out here, we did these wristbands," Ne-Yo said, holding the wristband up to the camera. "The wristband says 'Our prayers are with Japan.' We've been selling these at every show. Plus, we did T-shirts that say 'Spread [With] Through Music,' as well as posters. We've raised somewhere close to $100,000 just in merchandise. All of the proceeds of this stuff goes straight to the victims of the quake and tsunami. Not to mention, a percentage of the proceeds of the shows themselves goes to the victims of the quake and tsunami. We're definitely out here making a difference, more than just singing and dancing."

Ne-Yo said his as-yet-untitled forthcoming album, the follow up to 2010's Libra Scale, will be in stores sometime in September.

Siobhan Magnus Wins The Judges Back With 'Any Man Of Mine'

'Guess who's back? Siobhan!' Kara DioGuardi says after the Shania Twain Week performance.
By Katie Byrne

Siobhan Magnus on "American Idol" Tuesday
Photo: FOX

Country Week is always a wild card on "American Idol," either forcing some creativity from contestants working out of their comfort zones or burying them alive. Since Siobhan Magnus is a bit of a wild card herself, she had no problem tackling Shania Twain Week and making it work for her big voice and oddball sensibility.

Magnus chose "Any Man of Mine," keeping a pretty traditional country arrangement but speeding it up a notch. Twain, who opened up her songbook for the week and acted as mentor, warned Magnus that the song is "all about attitude. You've got to put some attitude in those lyrics."

Siobhan stayed true to Shania's vocals for most of the song — until the end, of course. For the grand finale, she let huge notes fly (including one of her trademark screeches) and unleashed some hair-metal-worthy guitars to match.

The judges have given Magnus a hard time in the past for either coloring inside the lines or going way overboard. What did they think of this go-round?

"I loved it," Randy Jackson said, kicking off the positive reviews and complimenting her "punk/country" look.

"Way to pull the Shania Twain into the station," Ellen DeGeneres said, continuing her choo-choo Twain joke from her first critique.

"Guess who's back? Siobhan!" Kara DioGuardi enthused.

Even Simon Cowell was into it, with one exception: "The screaming at the end may have gone a little bit ... it was almost like you were giving birth up there."

What did you think of Siobhan's performance? Did she get Shania's "attitude" right? Let us know in the comments!

Sum 41 Size Up Coldplay In Musical March Madness

After handling Arcade Fire, Deryck Whibley has eyes on Sweet 16.
By James Montgomery

No band has shaken up the 2011 Musical March Madness tournament quite like Sum 41, the Canadian punk quartet that entered the fray as a lowly #16 seed, then proceeded to run roughshod over heavily favored #1 Arcade Fire in the tourney's opening round.

Now, it's on to the second round, where Sum faces the unenviable task of taking down another titan: 8th-seeded Coldplay. And with voting now open in the matchup, MTV News decided to ask Sum frontman Deryck Whibley what he thinks about his band's chances. Can they shock the world once again and earn a berth in the Sweet 16? Turns out, even he's not sure — mostly because he hasn't been paying much attention.

Vote in the Sum 41/Coldplay matchup — and other second-round battles — right now on the Newsroom blog!

"Coldplay? I like those guys. I like them better than us. I hope they win because they're good," Whibley said. "I don't really care about sports. Our bass player, Cone, is really into it. I just found out what March Madness was, literally a couple days ago; I'd never even heard that term before."

Not exactly the talk of a band primed for a championship run. But still, with a legion of fanatics behind them, it wouldn't be a shock to see Sum 41 pull the upset in round two and advance to the Sweet 16. And to that end, even Whibley will admit he's not surprised by Sum's MMM success: He didn't think his band was the underdogs against Arcade Fire in the first round.

"I keep hearing that band's name. I've never heard a single note from them," he said, laughing. "I don't know what they are. I keep hearing they're, like, the coolest band since the Strokes, but I don't know."

And it's not like Whibley is throwing in the towel against Coldplay, either — "I mean, if we won, that would be great," he said — and really, however far they go in the tournament is up to you. Voting is now open on the Newsroom blog, and perhaps Sum's fans can guide them to the most unlikely championship in MMM history — not to mention the very fancy trophy.

Whibley said he would put the trophy "with the rest," laughing. "It may end up in the pool, you never know. I don't know, I don't have any plans ... mostly because I don't plan on winning it!"

MTV's Musical March Madness has moved on to the second round! Voting is now open and will continue until Sunday, when we'll reach the Sweet 16! All winners are determined by your votes. If your favorite act is still alive, it's up to you to guide them to glory. You can rally the troops on Twitter using the hashtag #MMM — but get ready, things only get tougher from here on out!

Marilyn Manson Tops Albums Chart, Record Industry Continues To Slump

Manson moves more than 118,000 copies of The Golden Age of Grotesque its first week of release.
By Joe D'Angelo

Marilyn Manson retained his Midas touch with the The Golden Age of Grotesque, while Cold's latest LP could barely get any hotter on next week's Billboard albums chart.

Manson moved more than 118,000 copies of his band's fifth album in its first week of release to lay claim to the #1 spot, according to SoundScan figures released Wednesday (May 21). Although the total barely surpassed the debut-week numbers of his previous album, 2000's Holy Wood (In the Shadow of the Valley of Death), by about 1,000 copies, it placed 12 spots higher on the chart. Manson's only other album to debut at #1 was 1998's Mechanical Animals, which sold upward of 222,000 copies in its first week.

Jacksonville, Florida's favorite sons — Limp Bizkit notwithstanding — Cold will make an impressive bow at #3 with Year of the Spider. Thanks to the single "Stupid Girl," which was created with the help of Weezer's Rivers Cuomo, Cold's third album sold more than 101,000 copies.

Between the two big debuts lies 50 Cent's Get Rich or Die Tryin'. The year's most successful album will jump three spots to #2, as its 15-week sales run has the 5 million mark in sight.

The remainder of next week's top 10 includes Evanescence's Fallen, surpassing sales of a million at #4 (96,000 last week); Norah Jones' Come Away With Me slipping four spots to #6 (87,000); Kelly Clarkson taking two steps forward with Thankful to #7 (78,000); the soundtrack to "Lizzie McGuire" also advancing a couple of slots to #8 (77,000); The Very Best of Cher dropping five places to #9 (71,000); and last week's leading LP, the Isley Brothers' Body Kiss, now bringing up the rear at #10 (67,000).

It was another disappointing week for the record industry. Aside from the chart debuts, only two albums in the top 40 saw an increase, albeit a marginal one, in their weekly sales totals. The overwhelming popularity of "The Matrix Reloaded" helped its soundtrack move up three spots to #5 as it sold more than 3,000 additional copies for a total of 96,000. Lil' Kim's La Bella Mafia also enjoyed a rise, leaping from #36 to #28, with help from a very slight sales swell.

Perhaps only the folks at the Universal Music Group, the largest major-label conglomerate and home to Manson and 50 Cent's label Interscope and Cold's Geffen, are smiling, with artists in next week's win, place and show slots.

Third Eye Blind's first album in four years, Out of the Vein, will make its presence known in the #12 slot. The single "Blinded (When I See You)" helped propel sales of more than 62,000 copies. That's 12,000 fewer copies sold than the first-week draw of their 1999 LP, Blue. But, indicative of the record industry's predicament, Blue's debut numbers placed it nearly four times further down the chart at #40.

With their highest first-week sales ever, disturbed pop-punks Alkaline Trio can cheer up now that Good Mourning landed at #20. Fans can't seem to get their fill of the rambunctious rambler "We've Had Enough," so more than 40,000 picked up their fifth LP, the follow-up to 2001's From Here to Infirmary.

Other notable debuts on next week's chart include Cleveland hardcore sextet Chimaira's The Impossibility of Reason at #117; and ESPN Presents Stadium Anthems, featuring bleacher bangers such as "We Will Rock You," "Celebration" and "Blitzkrieg Bop," at #149.

Oasis Reps Nix Talk Of Johnny Marr Joining Group

Oasis' Liam Gallagher

For those dreaming about a possible musical marriage between Oasis and former Smiths guitarist Johnny Marr, dream on.

A spokesperson for Creation Records, Oasis' British label, flatly denied the rumors to MTV News on Thursday, attributing talk of the possible Oasis-Marr union as a form of "the U.K. press' rampant attempts at wish fulfillment."

The spokesperson also compared the recent gossip to a sort of "rock and roll fantasy football," in which people tried to piece together "the ideal soccer team from the best available players."

The notion that Marr would join the band first surfaced in the U.K. paper "The Evening Standard" earlier this week, mere days after Oasis' rhythm guitarist, Paul "Bonehead" Arthurs, announced that he was leaving the band after eight years (see "Oasis Parts Company With 'Bonehead'").

A management representative for Marr refused to comment on "The Evening Standard" article and also declined to comment on other reports that suggested that the guitarist might be working on a few tracks for Beck's new solo record. The same management group, Ignition, represents both Oasis and Johnny Marr.

According to the Creation rep, Oasis is hoping to finish recording its fourth album in the next month or so and isn't currently looking to find a new rhythm guitarist prior to its completion.

The new Oasis album is tentatively due out in early 2000.

Fall Out Boy, Maroon 5, Decemberists Sign On For MySpace's Rock For Darfur Series

MySpace plans to rock the planet on November 10 with a series of 37 concerts aimed at raising awareness about the Darfur conflict and funds for relief. Rock for Darfur will find Fall Out Boy, Maroon 5, the Academy Is ..., Cartel, Coheed and Cambria, Colbie Caillat, Hot Hot Heat and the Decemberists donating to the cause a portion of the proceeds from their already-scheduled shows around the world on that day.

Some of the proceeds from the second annual series of shows will go to Oxfam International and the Save Darfur Coalition to help combat the humanitarian crisis in the Darfur region of Sudan as a result of the ongoing devastating civil war. The shows are being held on four continents, giving more fans the opportunity to support the cause. Last year's 22 Rock for Darfur concerts raised $50,000 for relief efforts, according to a MySpace spokesperson. Oxfam will use the funds to help provide those in Chad and the Darfur region with basic supplies such as clean water, shelter, blankets, soap and disease-prevention programs.

"As I watch the fire around my Southern California home, I know that the devastation of losing treasured personal property, a house or even a whole city cannot compare to the evil atrocities that the children and parents of Darfur have had to endure under the ongoing genocide," Megadeth singer/guitarist Dave Mustaine said in a statement. "I hope and pray you too will join in helping the people of Darfur in a small way by attending a 'Rock for Darfur' concert on November 10. All donations, large and small, are very necessary to help overpower this tragedy. I am doing my part, will you do yours?"

MySpace is also teaming with Warner Independent Pictures on the upcoming documentary "Darfur Now," which opens in select theaters on November 2 and features an appearance from Academy Award nominated actor Don Cheadle.

New Britney Spears 'Till The World Ends' Video Hits Web

The re-edited version of the post-apocalyptic party clip features more footage of Spears and her backup dancers showing off their moves.
By Jocelyn Vena

Britney Spears in her new "Till the World Ends" video
Photo: Jive

A dance version of Britney Spears' "Till the World Ends" video has hit the Web just in time for the weekend. The original clip, which premiered earlier this month and got lots of great buzz for Spears, shows the pop vixen leading a wild underground dance party as an apocalyptic storm hits the planet, and the new video features a lot of similar footage with a number of noticeable changes.

One of the most conspicuous differences is that the new "Till the World Ends" clip offers a lengthier peek into some of the sleek moves of Spears' backup dancers. There are definitely more shots of Britney dancing as well, even if sometimes they are obscured in shadow. Interestingly enough, much of the apocalypse storyline has been edited out to make room for those new dancing shots. While the party looks the same, the fact that the world is crashing around them is a nonissue for this version of the Ray Kay-directed video.

Rather than focusing on the impending doom outside, this cut displays all the fun down in Spears' sweaty underground party. As the video closes out, there are shots of her dancers, individually, showing off their skills, intercut with footage of Spears smiling as she sings about getting her party on.

The new clip's ending is entirely different from that of the original. Instead of emerging from her post-apocalyptic party to a sun-drenched world that, well, has not ended, Spears just looks into the camera, still apparently hiding from what is assumed to be some catastrophe that has befallen the Earth. It hints at a darker finish for Spears and her partiers ... maybe in this version the world does end.

"The real music video is best, of course," Ray Kay tweeted on Thursday about his re-edited version of the clip. "But it's fun to watch the choreography too."

Do like like the dance-heavy re-edited version of Britney's "Till the World Ends" video? Let us know in the comments.

Metal File: Haunted, Sepultura, Dokken & Orphanage In This Week's Hard News

With frontman Peter Dolving's pinched nerve healed, band plotting U.S. tour starting mid-February.
By Chris Harris and Jon Wiederhorn

The Haunted
Photo: Century Media

On Tuesday, the Haunted held a band meeting in Fort Worth, Texas, and discussed the band's future on the Meshuggah, God Forbid and Mnemic tour — which hits Denver's Ogden Theatre on Friday (October 21). Frontman Peter Dolving was dealing with some intense pain; he'd pinched a nerve in his back the week before and hadn't been the same since. Would the band recruit a fill-in for Dolving or would it drop off the tour?

Luckily for the Haunted's fans, Dolving was treated for the pain, and the Ozzfest 2005 vets pushed on. For guitarist Patrik Jensen, it was important that the band see this trek through. "We've been seeing lots of Ozzfest T-shirts, and on that tour we only did 20-minute sets," he said; on this run, the band's playing a full 45. "We owe it to our fans."

And the Haunted means that. The band's prepping a headlining tour of the U.S. that'll kick off in mid-February called the Bad Seeds Tour; Jensen said the guys haven't decided on openers just yet but were considering a number of bands.

"We've done so many opening tours on this album [2004's rEVOLVEr] that we need to come back to the U.S. and treat everybody to a headlining set, playing an hour and 15, hour and 20 minutes instead of playing just the 30- and 40-minute shows," said Jensen, who's also known for his work with Witchery. The tour will last five weeks and will be the band's first U.S. headliner in over two years.

Despite the short sets, Ozzfest was certainly a memorable experience for Jensen. "It was cool hanging out with all the bands and getting to know all the people. Ozzfest is like a small community, traveling all across America," he said. "And I never expected the members of Iron Maiden and Black Sabbath would be in the backstage catering area and that I'd be able to talk to them." Still, he doesn't expect to see the Haunted ever returning to the package tour unless they were offered a better slot.

"We've done it once," he reasoned. "It would be better to maybe do the Gigantour and play in front of a new crowd again."

After this current jaunt, the Haunted will head overseas for a European trip with God Dethroned and God Forbid. In between the December 17 end of that tour and the start of Bad Seeds, Jensen said the band will write material for a still-untitled rEVOLVEr follow-up.

The rest of the week's metal news:

Mudvayne, whose "Forget to Remember" is the lead track on the "Saw II" soundtrack, will play a midnight set at the film's screening party in Las Vegas October 27. "Saw II" star and former New Kids on the Block member Donnie Wahlberg will also attend — though a duet of the teen-pop band's hit "I'll Be Loving You (Forever)" seems unlikely. The soundtrack comes out Tuesday and also features remixes of songs by Marilyn Manson, Queens of the Stone Age and Puscifer (Tool's Maynard James Keenan with ex-Nine Inch Nails guitarist Danny Lohner), plus songs from the Used, Sevendust, Papa Roach, Skinny Puppy, Bloodsimple, Revolting Cocks, Buckethead and others. ... Songs from Strapping Young Lad, Fear Factory, Trivium, Chimaira, Soilwork and others will be featured on the forthcoming "Rainbow Six: Lockdown" soundtrack. ... Dutch doom specialists Orphanage split this week. "From recent internal discussions, it appeared that there was too much irritation and a lack of mutual trust to be able to make a new Orphanage product by the high-quality standards that the band has been known for throughout the years," the band said in a statement. ...

Portland, Oregon, brutal sludge band Facedowninsh-- are nearly finished writing their third album, Npon. The disc will be recorded in November at Pontchartrain Studios in Durham, North Carolina, and should be out by March. ... Static-X will hit the road with Ill Niño and Opiate for the Masses from November 9 in Tempe, Arizona, through November 26 in Fargo, North Dakota. The new single from the band's current album, Start a War, will be "Dirthouse." ... Dokken, whose forthcoming, tentatively titled album Lightning Strikes Again should fall sometime next year, have rolled out a slew of new tour dates, the first being November 30 in Las Vegas. The band will hit Los Angeles, Denver, Seattle and Salt Lake City before things wind down December 20 in Solana Beach, California. ... The Deep Purple DVD "Live in Concert 72/73," which features the band's powerhouse lineup — singer Ian Gillan, guitarist Ritchie Blackmore, bassist Roger Glover, keyboardist Jon Lord and drummer Ian Paice — comes out November 15. The DVD features nine songs in black and white from a 1972 show in Denmark and three in color from a 1973 concert in New York. Tracks include "Space Truckin'," "Highway Star" and "Smoke on the Water." ...

Brazil thrash band Sepultura will release separate versions of the CD and DVD Live in Sao Paulo on November 8. Both formats capture a show from April 3, 2005, that spanned the band's career from 1985 to 2003. The DVD features a second disc with a documentary of the band and the videos "Mindwar," "Bullet the Blue Sky" and "Choke." ... A Motörhead double DVD "Stage Fright" will be released on January 10. The first disc is a concert which was filmed in Düsseldorf, Germany, in 2004 and the second features clips of soundchecks, backstage footage and a documentary about the band's road crew. ... Swedish death-metal band Darkane will embark on their first-ever U.S. tour, supporting Fear Factory and Strapping Young Lad from October 28 in Lawrence, Kansas, through December 5 in Vancouver. Soilwork and It Dies Today are also on the bill. Darkane's fourth album, Layers of Lies, came out in July. ... Kreator and Napalm Death will be bringing A Perfect Murder and the Undying out with them on a 34-date U.S. tour set to kick off February 21 in Quebec; dates run through March 25 in West Springfield, Virginia. ... Oakland, California, stoner-grunge band Totimoshi are working on their third album, which is being produced by Helmet frontman Page Hamilton. The record is tentatively scheduled for release in early 2006. ...

Brutal Cornhuskers Cellador will hit Tampa's Mana Studio on December 16 to start working on their debut disc. Erik Rutan (Soilent Green, the Absence) will produce the effort, which is set for a late spring 2006 release. ... Finnish stoner-rockers Mannhai will begin working on their forthcoming opus next month. Look for the as-yet-untitled disc to include "Fuzzmaster," "Downers" and "Better Hate Yesterday." ... Black-metal legends Marduk will "unleash upon mankind" 17 live cuts recorded during the band's recent Deathmarch Tour in the form of Warschau: Dance of Death.
